Fine Art Photography | Finally Some New Work

I finally found the time to get some new work together and posted it on the site a couple of days ago. The California portfolio has many more images, and quite a few of them are in color (crazy for me, I know). I am becoming more and more fond of a lot of the photographs in there; sometimes I think I need to live with them for a while and see if I like them for a longer period of time. The immediacy is always exciting but if you look at the image weeks or months later and it still isn't exciting then I know it won't last. Take a look:

Carizzo Plain - Take 2

Carizzo Plain - Take 2
Here are some more of my favorites from the Carizzo Plain trip. It's an interesting place for the landscape, but also because of the desolation. People do live there, we drove by a school, but it also could have been a ghost town. I guess it would be a good photographic series on the place as a whole, the landscape and the people. Maybe one day...

Here a quickie shot of the Rattlesnake that I almost had some words with:

My site was Hacked

My site was Hacked
If you visited my site, www.randallgarnick.com, in the last few days you would have seen a warning under the google search or a big warning before the homepage loaded. 'This site may be an attack site' or something to that effect. I didn't know I was so important that someone, or something would somehow want to insert ridiculous and malicious code into my pages. I feel so important now, like I've actually made it. Just kidding - and it's all fixed.

I hope to find a minute to put up some more of the Carizzo Plain images this week.

Quote for Whenever...

Quote for Whenever...
I get these quotes, from Runnersworld.com, and sometimes they just say a lot of nothing but every now and again I get one that really hits home. Feeling pretty sore this morning after a nearly 10 mile run yesterday and thought this quote makes sense in running but also in life:

"The idea that the harder you work, the better you're going to be is just garbage. The greatest improvement is made by the man or woman who works most intelligently."
Bill Bowerman, running coach

Think about that...

Carrizo Plain National Monument

Carrizo Plain National Monument
So for my b'day a few weeks back, T & I took off for the Carrizo Plain National Monument. Here's a link to the BLM page:

Carizzo

It's one of those places you would never just stumble upon, but very cool. Here are a few shots (and in color for a change!!)

Capitola Trip

Capitola Trip
T & I drove up to Capitola last weekend to scope the place out. Neither of us were sure exactly how to say it - I say it 'Cap-E-tola' and T says 'Cap-eh-tola'. I'm pretty sure I'm right, but who really knows. Check out a few from the day:

Calla Lilies

Calla Lilies
So after I can say too many months of walking by this great stretch of calla lilies right in my neighborhood I finally found the time (and motivation) to start photographing them. I played with quite a few of them and kept going back and forth to find just the right ones. Some rain ruined a butt load of them and the idea of letting another season go before I made some nice images of them really lit a fire under me. After 2 afternoons in my studio I have half a dozen that I really like. Some I photographed in natural light, and some in using strobe. Can you tell the difference? I guess you'll have to wait until I post some more to guess.
Enjoy...

Good Times - Boston Trip

Good Times - Boston Trip
Well - finally I made it back to the homeland - that's right the greatest place on earth, no, not Disney World, but close - Boston. It doesn't seem like it's been 2.5 years living out here in California, but man I don't miss the Boston winters (except for snow football with the Captain America outfit - shhh. don't tell anyone). Click on the link above, or below to see a few funny shots of the trip. I'll try to get some winter-style landscapes I made posted sometime as well.

Good Times

Raison D'Etre

Raison D'Etre
I was re-reading this quote by super-talented photographer Joe McNalley, and well it sums a lot up better than I could have written it today:

"There's never been any guarantees, or forgiveness, or for the last 10 or more years, fairness, in this industry. But here's the thing.

We are out there, in the air, in the world. We don't go to a cubicle farm everyday and stair at dismaying numbers on a screen. We make pictures. At the end of the day, we create something potentially significant that did not exist at the beginning of the day. We go forward, despite the uncertainty. Because this is an act of love and passion, which defies reason and prudence.

And we make that occasional good frame, the one that sings, the one that lifts our hearts and the hearts of everyone who sees it. That well and truly is as good as it gets."

New Fine Art Gallery on Site! | The Intimate Landscape

New Fine Art Gallery on Site! | The Intimate Landscape
From around 2001 to 2006, when I moved to Monterey, California, I photographed the landscape that was familiar to me - the East Coast. Subjects that interested me when I initially started to become more serious about my photography were much more subtle. I suppose the title for series of images I made then, The Intimate Landscape, just came naturally to me. So I am finally adding some more images to the Portfolio section of the site - 10 images for now. They represent close to a third of what will ultimately end up in that series. Take a look:
